Every year the Friends of Ireland (Cairde na h’Éireann) hosts an interfaith ecumenical service for the feast of St Patrick.

Unfortunately, last year due to COVID it was cancelled. This year it’s back – but bookings are essential so please RSVP with Jill Hanson (Contact Below).

A part of the St Patricks’ service every year is devoted to the celebration of Irish involvement in the Canberran community. This year’s public speaker will be Matthew C Kiernan AM MBBS PhD DSc FRACP FAHMS

Matthew is the grandson of our first Ambassador of Ireland and will have some interesting stories. He is the brother of FoI past speaker, Carol Kiernan.

Professor Matthew Kiernan is the Bushell Chair of Neurology at the University of Sydney, Co-Director of the Brain and Mind Centre and Consultant Neurologist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney. After completing a Jesuit education at Gonzaga College in Dublin, he commenced medicine at University College Dublin. On the advice of a visiting Wallabies prop forward on the all-conquering 1984 Grand Slam Wallaby Tour of Ireland and the British Isles, Kiernan returned to Australia to undertake further medical training. After completion of training in internal medicine with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and specialisation in neurology in Sydney, Kiernan was appointed to the National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square London and the Institute of Neurology at University College London for the next 5 years, before returning to his alma mater in Sydney. In addition to his current roles, he is President of the Brain Foundation responsible for allocating funds to research and medical education for the treatment and prevention of neurological disorders and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry(BMJ Publishers UK).

A light afternoon tea will be provided after the service.
Cash donations for charity will be collected during the service.
