Last month the Canberra Irish Language Association sadly said goodbye to the Ambassador of Ireland to Australia, Breandán Ó Caollaí, and his wife Carmel Callen, who are returning to Ireland. They return home after seeing Ireland and Australia through it’s 75th year of diplomatic relations.
Both are great Irish speakers. Both spent significant time supporting and encouraging our Canberra Irish classes. In particular, we recall with thanks the special functions they organised at the Embassy and the opportunity to meet President Michael D Higgins during his official visit to Australia in October 2017.
Breandán and Carmel will be greatly missed in Australia, but their warmth, advice, and support will always be remembered.
Go n-éirí an bóthar leat. Go raibh an ghaoth go brách ag do chúl.
May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back.
