Siúcra: A love letter to the Irish language

Writer and actor Roxanna Nic Liam’s short film commissioned for Scríobh festival in axis, Ballymun explores the complex relationship of a non-native Irish speaker with a language she feels deeply tied to.

Siúcra is an exploration of identity within the Irish language through the ‘seanfhocal’, some of our oldest, wisest and wittiest sayings. It’s about discovering what Irish means to us, even those who live far away from any Gaeltachts. It’s a personal story, it’s a national question, it’s a universal feeling. Take a journey around the streets of inner city Dublin and a journey within yourself.
